A Complete Checklist for Inspecting Pre-Owned Toyota RAV4 Before Export

A used RAV4 can be a good buy or an expensive mistake. Use this checklist to inspect documents, body, mechanics and the hybrid system before any unit leaves the yard.

Toyota RAV4 SUV side profile ready for inspection

Used RAV4s are popular in many import markets because the model has a strong reputation. But a used car is only as good as its history. Problems you miss at the yard become your problem at the port, at customs or in your showroom. This checklist helps importers inspect any pre-owned RAV4 before export.

Note: EVtoU sells new, 0 km vehicles only. If you want to avoid used-car risks entirely, see the new 2026 Toyota RAV4 range, which ships within 10 working days after payment when in stock.

Can the car be legally exported and imported?

Check the legal side first. There is no point inspecting a car that cannot clear customs.

  • Import age limits. Many countries limit the age of used vehicles they accept. Check the current official rule for your market.
  • Steering side. Some markets accept only left-hand or only right-hand drive.
  • Ownership and registration. The seller must be able to show clear title and deregister the car for export.
  • No finance or liens. Confirm the car is not under a loan or legal claim.
  • Export permission. In China, used-car export goes through licensed exporters. Ask your supplier to confirm they can export legally.

Do the documents match the car?

Paperwork problems are the most common reason a used car gets stuck at customs. A missing page or a mismatched number can delay clearance for weeks. Work through these checks with the original documents in hand, not copies sent by message.

  1. Match the VIN on the registration, the windscreen plate, the door pillar label and the body stamp.
  2. Check the engine number against the registration where shown.
  3. Ask for service records and compare dates with the odometer reading.
  4. Request an accident and insurance claim history where available.
  5. Check the manufacture date. It affects age limits and sometimes duty.

What should I look for on the body and chassis?

Body and chassis checks for a used RAV4.
AreaWhat to checkWarning sign
PanelsPaint colour and gaps between panelsUneven gaps or colour mismatch suggest repairs
UnderbodyRust, scrapes, bent partsFresh underseal over a damaged area
Flood signsCarpet, seat rails, under the spare wheelSilt, damp smell, rust on seat bolts
Glass and lightsCracks, chips, clouded lensesMixed brands of glass may mean a replaced part
TyresTread depth, date code, even wearUneven wear can point to alignment or suspension faults

How do I check the engine and drivetrain?

  • Start from cold if possible. Listen for knocks, rattles or a rough idle.
  • Look for oil or coolant leaks under the car and around the engine.
  • Check the oil level and colour, and the coolant level.
  • Test drive at low and medium speed. The transmission should be smooth with no slip or jerk.
  • On AWD versions, check that the system engages without noise on a loose or wet surface.
  • Scan for stored fault codes with a diagnostic tool.

How do I check a used RAV4 hybrid?

Hybrids need extra checks. The hybrid battery and power electronics are the costliest parts to replace, so do not skip this step.

  • Run a diagnostic scan of the hybrid system and battery. Ask for a printed report.
  • Watch the dashboard for hybrid system warnings at start-up and during the drive.
  • Check that the car moves off in electric mode at low speed when the battery has charge.
  • Listen for the battery cooling fan and check that its intake is clean.
  • Ask whether the hybrid battery has ever been replaced or repaired.

What about the interior and electronics?

Test every screen, camera, window, seat motor and air-conditioning setting. Check the language and region settings of the infotainment system, since some cannot be changed for your market. Look for wear on the steering wheel, pedals and driver seat, and compare it with the odometer. Heavy wear on a low-mileage car is a red flag.

What should happen before shipping?

Take dated photos and video of every car before loading, and keep them with the shipping file. Agree in writing what condition the car must be in on arrival. Then choose the shipping method; our article on Ro-Ro vs. container shipping explains the options.

If the checks feel like too much risk, a new car removes most of them. Compare the 2.0 Hybrid FWD Elite and other new versions, or request a quote for 0 km stock.
