Ro-Ro vs. Container Shipping: What Is the Safest Way to Transport Your Imported RAV4?
Both Ro-Ro and container shipping move thousands of new cars safely every year. The right choice depends on your order size, your port and how much protection you want.

Once you have chosen your RAV4 versions, the next question is how to move them. New cars leave China in two main ways: Ro-Ro (roll-on, roll-off) vessels and shipping containers. Both are safe when done properly. They differ in protection, flexibility and the ports they can reach.
What is Ro-Ro shipping?
A Ro-Ro ship is a floating car park. Vehicles are driven up a ramp, parked on a deck and lashed to the floor. At the destination they are driven off. There is no lifting and no container handling. Ro-Ro lines run fixed routes between major vehicle ports.
What is container shipping?
In container shipping, cars are loaded into a closed steel box, usually a 40-foot high-cube container. Each car is chocked at the wheels and strapped down. Racking systems can stack cars on two levels to fit more in one box. The container is sealed at loading and opened at the destination.

Which method is safer?
| Factor | Ro-Ro | Container |
|---|---|---|
| Protection from weather and sea air | Covered deck, but open to the ship's air | Fully enclosed and sealed |
| Handling risk | Cars driven on and off by port staff | Cars handled only at loading and unloading |
| Theft risk | Lower on board; more exposure at busy ports | Sealed box; low risk if seal is intact |
| Best order size | Larger lots | From one unit; good for mixed lots |
| Port access | Only ports with Ro-Ro service | Almost any container port; can continue by rail or truck |
| Personal or extra cargo | Usually not allowed inside cars | Spare parts can often share the container |
For most small and medium RAV4 orders, the container is the safer and more flexible choice. The car stays sealed from loading to arrival, and fewer people touch it. Ro-Ro is a safe, proven method too, and it can make sense for large lots going to a port with regular Ro-Ro calls.
Most damage in car shipping does not happen at sea. It happens during handling: driving on and off, parking in crowded terminals, and moving between yards. So the real safety question is how many times the car is handled and by whom. A container cuts the number of handling steps. Ro-Ro reduces lifting but adds driving by port staff. Either way, ask for photos at loading so you have a clear record of condition before the voyage.
What does each method mean for a hybrid RAV4?
Hybrid and petrol RAV4s ship the same way. Cars travel with a low fuel level, as most carriers require. The 12 V battery and the hybrid battery stay in the car. If the cars will wait at the port or in transit for a long time, tell us. We can advise on battery care so the cars start easily on arrival.
What about landlocked markets?
Containers have a clear advantage when your market has no coast. A container can go by sea to a transit port and then continue by rail or truck, without unloading the cars. This matters for markets such as Ethiopia, Rwanda, Armenia and Central Asian markets like Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, where overland transport from China is also an option. We confirm the best route for each order.
How do you protect cars before shipment?
- Pre-shipment check. Each car is inspected and photographed in the yard before it leaves.
- Careful loading. Cars are driven in slowly, chocked at all four wheels and strapped to fixed points.
- Optimised loading. For mixed-model orders, we plan the layout so different versions fit safely together.
- Milestone updates. You get photos and video at each step, including loading and sealing.
- Clear paperwork. The bill of lading and container or vessel details are shared so you can track the shipment.

How do I choose for my order?
- Count your units. One to a few cars usually points to a container.
- Check your port. If it has no regular Ro-Ro service, choose a container.
- Think about inland transport. If the cars must travel on after the port, a container saves handling.
- Ask for both quotes on larger lots, then compare cost, transit time and protection.
Shipping method and Incoterm work together. Read FOB vs. CIF for bulk RAV4 shipping to see who books the transport, then request a quote with your destination and quantity.
FAQs
How many RAV4s fit in one 40-foot container?
It depends on the loading method and whether a racking system is used. We confirm the exact number for your versions when we plan the load.
Is Ro-Ro cheaper than container shipping?
Sometimes, mainly for large lots on busy Ro-Ro routes. For small or mixed orders, containers are often more practical. Rates change by route and season, so we quote each order.
Can I add spare parts to my container?
Often yes, if space and rules allow. Tell us what you want to add when you request a quote so we can plan the load and documents.
